The Artemis

The Artemis

0 INK

On a starship in the year 3371, a crew of engineers and technicians search through the universe for a new place to call home after the Reckoning, mankind's knowledge of the expansion of the sun.

1,836 readers have visited The Artemis since Kadurantia created it.

Introduction

In the year 2051, man was fed up with itself. There were too many humans in the world, too much of their technology, their poison. Their scientists, while brilliant, never created designs that helped the world, they destroyed it, and the public was too much under their spell to do anything but speak against it; there was no action but the act of destruction. So, because they could not speak out against the scientists that were already there, they created new scientists, ones that they could speak out against, that had no spell over them.

They spoke out, and they spoke out, and they spoke out, until eventually the scientists said, "well, if you want to be a bunch of ungrateful buffoons, we advise you to fix this yourself. You never spoke out to the last generation of scientists,". The public was at a loss with this answer. They scratched their heads, and decided to ask the scientists to build them a new world, without all the mutated fish and acid rain of their world. It was too late: the entire scientific community, 60% of the world's population, had taken their mental prowess and left the planet behind, leaving only the message of: "you're done for, we're off to Mars!". The scientists later realized that they may have been scientists but none of them were pilots. Most of them died horrible painful deaths.

But back on Earth, the humans left had realized that they were indeed probably done for. So, they sat back and waited for the world to kill them, as they had killed it. But a miraculous thing happened. The world seemed to forgive them. Plants grew through the skyscrapers and speedways, vines invaded the apartment buildings and mansions, and soon the world was lush and green again, a mountain indistinguishable from the Chrysler Building. The metal corroded, the reactors ceased to run, and the power lines collapsed under their own weight. Everywhere there was the remains of an era that was very quickly becoming lost in the ravages of time. They kept the books and the farms and vineyards, but, to put it simply, both Microsoft and Apple lost.

986 years after the Great Reawakening, humankind returned to the Dark Ages. There were four Territories, spreading over lands that were once home to vast cities of metal and grime but now contain nothing but rolling plains, occasionally speckled with debris and ruins. The four Territories each had a leader, the leaders formed the Council, and the Council mad sure that the world that they had built would never be tainted by the electronic or the plastic, ever again. The four Territories: Theola in Europe/Northern Asia, Kamisuki in Japan/Asia, Golemn in Africa, Finn in the Americas.

Things had been changing for humankind, but things have always changed for humankind. Then, one day, a village in Kamisuki discovered a book in its library basement, a book that describes the sun expanding. The Reckoning had come. Now, the world was in turmoil, searching for old plans for technology, burning forests, and returning to the old ways of mechanics and travelers, but they vowed on the spirit of their new ways that they will never go back to computer chips. They will leave this death trap, and they will do it before the sun expands, whenever that may be. You should really check dates before you go nuts.

A group of people, the Revivalists discovered a book, entitled the Key of Solomon. In this book were designs from the Early Days of Victoria, in 1841. In 1841, Da Vinci-esque amateur scientist named Richard Solomon came up with a series of designs for steamboats, and along with these were steamships, clocks, gears, and above all: steam. This was the answer to their problem.

Now, in the year 3371, mankind is launching its first steamship to deep space. The steamship Artemis, it is manned by fifty people, the captain, the engineers, and the navigational officers. With wormhole technology modified to steam design, they are exploring a place far too big for themselves. And somewhere, lost in space is the remains of the crew of scientists that were launched 1,300 years ago. It's kind of like Star Trek, new frontiers and stuff, and there can be "episodes" story arcs that begin and end, maybe like X-Files with the subplot that went through all the episodes, but mostly it's a search for a habitable place to live for the entire human race which at this point is about 50 million, so a large planet. So far, I really don't have a specific plot, just a main goal.

Playing Rules]
1. Don't Godmod. This is what you look like when you do. That includes killing off another character without the owners prior permission.
2. Post semi-frequently. That's twice a week, any longer than that, and your character will have to disappear on a rogue mission or something, I don't know. But really, some people are waiting on you when you post.
3. Post at least two paragraphs every time you post. A paragraph is defined by the first block of text in the introduction, or 4-6 sentences long.
4. Bad spelling is a no-no. I was the administrator on an old roleplay forum that went down, and I hated the rampant bad grammar and spelling. Everyone makes mistakes but I will expect decent grammar and spelling, and that goes for character pages as well as actual roleplaying.
5. Make sure every in-character post contributes something to the RPG, no pointless monologues on the importance of martini glasses. Even if it's just replying to another character's query.
6. Your character's beliefs do not have to reflect yourself, and as such, you do NOT need to clarify that they are not your beliefs. Neither do you have to soapbox. We really don't care about your beliefs, we just want to have fun, and if you're going to be soap-boxing, neither of us is going to take anything from this other than annoyance.
7. When OOC, be kind and respectful of the views of other players. I understand that it is sometimes hard to remember that there are people on the other side of this screen, but you have feelings, and they have feelings too. If you are being mistreated or see someone else mistreated, notify me and I will see how I can deal with it.
8. This is not an 'Adult' game. There will be no sexual content or extreme gore. Maybe a kiss or so if the roleplay goes that direction, and things may be mentioned that are more 'Adult' but there will be no adult scenes. The characters are adults, the RP isn't.
9. Do not act out another person's character. I doubt this will be much of a problem, but I've seen it as a problem in some other places, and man is it annoying.

Character Creation]
1. Ages. In this day and age, adulthood is around 16-17, so all characters must be 16+ on the Artemis. If family members back on Earth are mentioned, or we meet the ship from 1,300 years ago with the scientists in it, they can be children because these people have been living in the same ship for generations and generations.
2. Types for characters that don't have specific roles. They can be an Engineer, Medic, Technician (which is like Science or Weapons technician), or Other. When thinking of Other, try to fit them into the steampunk civilization, I'll accept anything that fits in, and there aren't a lot of rules as to what fits in. There is only one Spiritual Leader, and she's sort of a priest. I doubt this will be personally offensive to anyone, but if you are fervently religious and find pagan/dryadic beliefs offensive, they will probably be rampant if that particular character has anything to say about it. As for science, it's called alchemy because they didn't want to call it science, just a tip for if you want to play a scientist.
3. No Mary-Sues If you're thinking up a character, PM me to save a spot and take this test to make sure the character you're planning on falls into either 22-29 or below. That is optional, but recommended. Don't pay attention to the name questions, names don't matter in terms of Mary-Sueishness. Her name can even be Mary-Sue if you want. When I say Mary-Sue I just mean a character that doesn't have to put any effort into something that's supposed to be a challenge, and no self-inserts.
4. If the gender gap between two genders is widening, please try to close it. If there's 12 women to 8 men, or something of the sort, than please attempt to make a man, or vice versa.
5. At this point there is going to be a maximum of fifteen characters, but as the story goes on, there may be more. Feel free to create aliens when they are necessary, or notify me when we need more characters, and I'll open the RP to more characters.
6. No purely good or evil characters, you can't identify with a character if it's an archetype, which good and evil are.

Re: [OOC] The Artemis

This looks really cool and I would like to create a character for it, could I reserve the ship historian? And what exactly does that role en tale?
Thanks!

Re: [OOC] The Artemis

Are we going to start this any time soon? It would be a shame if this RP died before it had a chance to start...

Re: [OOC] The Artemis

Can you reserve the Weapons Officer for me? I am working on a female character now. :)

Re: [OOC] The Artemis

I might join this. I don't have time to think up a character, but I'll figure that out when I have time.
