Introduction
Five years, five years of bloody war between the United Earth Directorate and the Alliance of Free Planets. The UED controls the heart of the human worlds. These worlds are were humanity had its start. Earth, the blue gem, the birth place of humanity now the capital world of the UED. Alpha Centauri, the first system to be colonized, now an industrial and military center. Polaris, the crown jewel of early colonization, now the vacation destination for those who can afford it. As such is heavily patrolled by the UED Navy.
The Alliance of Free Planets split from the UED about fifty years ago. At the time there was no big problem and it almost seemed to be mutually beneficial. With so many planets leaving it meant more resources for those that stayed. No one really expected the troubles that started about ten years ago. It started off small but tensions grow till a cruise ship was destroyed well taking on fresh supplies. The cruises ship was full of passengers and crew not to mention the supply ship and her crew. There was a drawn out fight about what happened till a member of the Alliance shot and killed a UED council member, taking his staff hostage. The UED managed to rescue the hostages but there were casualties on both side. This sparked the war that still rages on.
A new group of UED Marines looking to join the fight gear up for their training cruise. Normally this cruise would be done deep in UED space under close supper vision but with more and more resources going towards the war the trainees are to under go there cruise in the field. The mission? The UEDS Hope will travel to the paradise planet Serenity. Once there teams will scout a location to set up a fire bases planet-side. As soon as the bases are setup teams will scout an unidentified structure code named Citadel and the surrounding area. According to intel this should be just an other routine mission. I mean what could possibly go wrong?

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 6 authors
0400 - Gunnery Sergeant Foley enters the Marine Barrice on board the UEDS Hope. At the top of his lungs, "ON YOUR FEET! EVERYONE UP! MISSION BRIEFING AT ZERO FOUR THIRTY! GET DRESSED AND DON'T BE LATE! NOW MOVE IT MARINES!" Seeing every Marine jump to their feet and hurry to the end of their rack then hurry to get ready, Foley about faces and walks out.
0430 - As the last few people file in, the room is setup like a large lecture hall with seats full of enlisted Marines. On stage are a few officers, a podium and a large screen above the stage so everyone can see it. Once the last few people are seated, a Colonel walks up to the podium. "Here is were we're at. As you all know we have been at war for the last five years. As such we do not have the time or resources to commit to a normal training cruise. So this mission will be handled by both our trainees and our battle hardened. We are en-route to Wolf three five nine. This system is far from the front but stay on your toes out there. We will enter standard orbit over the planet Serenity at zero seven hundred. At that time the Hope and the fly-boys will conduct recon. At zero eight hundred, the first wave of Marines will deploy on TS heavy drop-ships with an escort of Valkyrie Gunships. The objective, is this unidentified structure code named Citadel. Once the first wave is planet side, recon a site to setup a firebase. Once the site is secured signal the base crew. The Army will be in charge of setup the bases. We will send Marines with them to help get the job done right. In the mean time once the army shows up, move to the Citadel. I recommend a three team setup but as always its up to the men in the field. As the base getting set up we will be deploying more Marines and supplies. Once planet side they can be sent were ever they are needed. Target time from planet fall to having the Citadel secured, six hours. This planet is vital to this sector, we are going to establish a new base of operation here. I know you wont let us down. Stay alert, stay alive and come home. Easy day. Semper Fi. Major take over." The Colonel nods to a Major then leaves the room.
The Major steps up to the podium. "Alpha, you will deploy to the North at LZ Utah. That puts you in some hills with a good line of sight. Be careful in the woods, there is a clearing that looks good for a base but we have no idea if there is any one or anything in the woods. Once you have secured a base site we will deploy firebace Utah. You will have support from Bravo and Charley team as well as gunship support from Echo. As the first part of setting up the base we will deploy Mike's cabins. Alpha your cabin will be Zulu. Delta team will deploy at LZ Omaha in the Southern plains. Open ground, minimal cover clear targets for anyone in the Eastern Mountains. You will be supported by Foxtrot and Golf. Air support by Hotel. Kilo team your to the West, landing on a beach at LZ Juno. Supported by Lima, Romeo and air by Papa. Sierra sorry you get to land in the Eastern Mountains at LZ Gold. Between you and the Citadel will be a few miles of mountains and the the forest that surround the Citadel. But don't worry your not alone, Uniform and Victor will be with you. Since the mountains make it hard to maneuver you will get drop-ship support from Whiskey. Once all teams are planet side and have moved on the Citadel, first thing setup an LZ at the Citadel code named Sword. After the exterior and Sword is secured move inside. As the Colonel said Stay alert, stay alive and come home. Easy day. Semper Fi. Muster at zero seven thirty at your drop-ships. Till then dismissed." The Major walks over and starts talking to some of the other officers on the stage as people star filing out of the room.
Veca groggily opened her eyes. She was aboard the UEDS Hope and she needed to move! She sprung out of bed hurriedly got dressed making sure to pause and make sure her uniform was neat before Veca left the room to rush to the mission briefing. She did not need to be one of the last people there. When she got to the mission briefing and took her seat she watched the rest of the marines walk in. When the briefing started she listened closely. When they were dismissed quickly got out of her seat and went to prepare for zero seven thirty.
"ON YOUR FEET! EVERYONE UP! MISSION BRIEFING AT ZERO FOUR THIRTY! GET DRESSED AND DON'T BE LATE! NOW MOVE IT MARINES!"
I'm 22 years old, my name is Alexander Carrow, sometimes called "Stitches" by my military friends, and I have never known a Galaxy without war. This war that has been raging twice as long as I have been alive has now been a pivotal aspect on almost two generations of people, this is merely the start of my chapter.
Rolling out of bed and rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, I wonder how the hell I ever wound up here. I had grown up in a fairly Rural part of Alpha Centauri 4, known as Artio, with two loving parents. Most of my best memories are of going on various outdoor trips with my parents. Unfortunately that wouldn't last as long as I would have liked and they died in a car crash when I was 17. After kicking around the foster system for a year I decided to enlist in order to escape that life. My outdoors skills stood me in good stead during basic training and all that followed. When the time came to choose a specialization I volunteered to be trained as a squad medic, though my tracking and outdoors skills could have led me to another profession. I just didn't want anyone to die who could be saved ever again.
Quickly getting dressed it was time to report for assignments. Turns out we get to report to a hilly forested area that will be just my speed, hopefully my first deployment goes well. I don't reallly know my squad yet but they seem very experienced, gotta wonder why they're training rookies like me in that case.
The first person to arrive was a Lieutenant (LT) in a flight suit with a Cobra emblem on her arm. She stood a long the left wall were she would be out of the way. Close behind her was a Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) who was dressed in a more dress style flight suit with large Valkyrie wings on her back. She stands behind the LT. A sort time later Bravo team shows up and take their seats in the back few benches. The last ones to show up are Charlie team who fill in were they can.
Alex wakes up in a hurry as the gunny yells out. She quickly gets ready and heads to the briefing without a word, or even a look at anyone else. She sits silently listing to the briefing. The moment it is over she leaves making her way back to her bunk. She sits on her footlocker looking at a picture of her parents, they are both in army fatigues. Both her parents are army airborne.
Alex was raised a military brat. Her parents pushed her to be all she could be. As she grew up she decided she did not want to join the army like her parents, but having been raised and groomed to be a soldier she joined the Marines instead of the army. After college and ROTC she went to boot camp, here she quickly proved herself to be one of the top 10 rifle marksman in her class. Alex is not rude persa but she is overly quiet and reserved, to the point people think she does not like to work with other people.
"This is Gunnery Sergeant Foley. Alpha, Bravo, Charlie team report to the squad room on the double. Echo and Cobra flight leaders report to the squad room."
With this Alex puts her picture back into her footlocker and straightens her uniform. She walks into the squad room she sees that there are some officers in the room, she salutes to the LCDR and LT, as they acknowledge her she finds an aisle seat and waits for the second early morning brief to start.
After the briefing "this sounds like an easy mission." He walks out to find some coffee. Before he can find the mess he hears the call for the squad meeting.
As he walks into the squad room he salutes the two officers and makes his way down to the tiny sniper chick. He sits down next to her figuring this is where their squad is supposed to sit.
Wilzuun looks around. He jumps from his bunk and readies himself for the day. He's one of the last to leave for the first briefing. He finds a spot in the back to park for the first briefing, listening to the general consensus on what should happen with what groups.
During the first briefing, while patting himself down for all needed items for the day, he finds that he hadn't placed a precious item in his locker. After the conclusion of the briefing he makes his way back to the bunks, and his foot locker to place the folded paper inside. He nods towards the female that he passes by as he makes way for his locker.
"This is Gunnery Sergeant Foley. Alpha, Bravo, Charlie team report to the squad room on the double. Echo and Cobra flight leaders report to the squad room."
Wilzuun looks around, closes his locker, and locks it up. Grabs the notepad, and the pen on the table, then proceeds to the squad room. Saluting the officers as he enters.
He sees the female that he passed, and some one he has an idea is in his squad. He makes his way to the end of the isle that they are on, and takes a seat.
The briefing as it went was fairly standard fare. Here are the objectives and here's who's doing them, complete with operational code names from The Second World War (Ok so Alex is kind of a military history buff). Just as they're about to get started the biggest guy in the squad comes grabs a seat next to him.
"stick close kid, I'll keep you alive." Alex chuckled a bit
"I mean I guess I could always use you as cover. After all you're a better door than you are a window."
After the briefing he had fully intended on going back to his bunk to do some light reading or maybe listen to music when all of a sudden the voice of Sergeant Foley came over the comms again ordering them all to the squad room again.
When Alex arrived the rest of the squad was already in there and sitting down so he slotted in on the row behind them. Leaning over forward so he could talk to everyone in the row in front he groused "Everyone notice the military seems to think the world is ending everytime the smallest thing happens?"
Wilzuun goes back to staring at his boots, still grinning.
The Gunny signs, "Ok Marines I'm not going to lie to you. Command is calling this an easy day, or a routine mission. Even gave us a target window of six hours. I don't see it that way. Every time we gear up, remember the old saying, 'The only easy day was yesterday.' Every mission we go on maybe our last. As such I will not promise to bring you all back alive. I will promise to do my best to bring as many of you back alive as I can and that Marines don't leave a man behind. So now that we got all that out of the way. This is our battle plan, we will fast rope onto an old rock slide, code name Simon's spin, on the back side of our first hill, code named Simon. Once we reach the summit there will be a rock overhang code name Simon's bill. Bravo, I want you to pack heavy. You will set up on the bill. From there you should have clear line of sight across the tops of the other hill straight to the Citadel. Alpha and Charlie will make our way down the hill to a stream code named Nile. Once one the other side we make our way up the second hill, code name Theodore. At the summit, Charlie will setup a two man observation post. Alpha and the rest of Charlie will make our way down the hill. Part way down we'll find a good spot to make a quick fall back spot before continuing. At the bottom we reach our first problem, a river code named Rhine. Charlie, you are incharge of the river crossing. You'll leave three of you on either side. Alpha will push up the third hill code name Alvin. Once we scout the summit, I'll active the becon to call in the army. At that point all of Charlie make your way to our position. Bravo, I want you to hold till the second wave of Marines can releave you, then meet up with us. Once Charlie gets to us, we will make our way to the Citadel. Estamated mission time till this point two hours. Charlie you'll setup outside, guard both anyone coming in or out. You and bravo should be the only ones coming in. You can join us after Bravo releaves you. Alpha will secure the inside of the Citadel. Cobra will help till we get across the Rhine. Echo will stay on station till Charlie enters the Citadel. Any questions, once we are done here we're heading to the armory and gear locker, so last chance to ask."
With a sign the Gunny turns his attention back to the room. As you could probably guess no the captain was not really talking about a poker game but giving me a heads up about the mission. As such there is a change in the battle plan. Bravo pack for rearguard. When we get to the citadel I want you to post outside. No one in or out unless its Alpha or Charlie . We are going to bypass Simon and Theodore. Cobra will run us low and fast through the valley up the Rhine. Once due North of the LZ, we'll off load either into the river if we cant get close to the shore or on to the bank. I want everyone dressed in wet gear. From there bravo will set up rearguard well Charlie and Alpha take the hill. Once clear Bravo will help us hold. Then we move on the Citadel. Alpha we are the vanguard on this mission. We will be the first in the Citadel and be in charge of clearing out. Charlie will secure a post a little ways inside. Echo I want you to fly high an loud to the rock slide then meet up with Cobra after our drop off. Drop any loss cargo the two of you might be caring just in case we need you. Changes to a mission like this are an other thing to get us to. Ok Bravo I want to head to the gear locker first well I help the others in the Armory. Bravo dismissed. Alpha and charlie wait till Bravo leaves then follow me to the Armory." As the Gunny finishes Bravo stands up and leaves through the side door without an other word.
Once the all of them disappeared through the door, "Ok fall in behind me." The Gunny leads the two squads through the side door and down the corridor to the squads armory. Once inside the Armory Chief and Gunny help everyone check their gear and sign it out. Once done the Gunny leads them down a corridor to the gear locker wear he and the gear locker Sergeant help them check their gear before signing it out.
