When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Five years after the death of his father, Mr. Peabody, his twenty-something son Sherman Peabody sets out across different dimensions to gather a group of heroes to confront the villains responsible for killing his father...

Introduction

“Sherman! Set the Wayback machine to---”

“Ah!” Sherman awoke from a fitful sleep, clutching his face in his hands. He'd had the dream again. It was five years to the day that his father, Mr. Peabody had confronted those strangers from another universe. And lost...

He was a young man when it happened...

… and now he was still a young man with a duty placed before him.

The ripe age of twenty-two and still much to learn. He'd studied so much of history from his father, having been able to traverse time and space with the help of the ingenious machine: The WABAC.

All of the studying, all of the lessons, all of the failed experiments culminated the progress of this one mission.

Sherman could remember it so clearly; the words his father spoke that day.

“Be a good boy, Sherman. Trust the Wayback. Trust where it will guide you.”

The teenage boy that he was at that time clutched the white beagle to his chest. This foster parent, an exemplary mention of what a good father could be considered, was mortally wounded. Sherman sobbed and shook his head.

“Mr. Peabody! You can't leave me... please...”

“Sherman, you have to be strong. The Wayback needs to be protected, but it can't do it without someone to pilot it. I'm... I'm dying, Sherman.”

“No... Mr. Peabody, no...”

The beagle smiled, placing his paw upon his son's cheek. Mr. Peabody didn't even think twice about the cherry-red streaks of blood running down from the corners of his own mouth.

“These ne'er-do-wells must be... be stopped. Use the Wayback, Sherman...” The canine coughed. “Use the Wayback to find them...”

“Find who, Mr. Peabody? I-I can't do this without you...”

“They won't be from our time, Sherman. Eight... eight will do...” Mr. Peabody continued to cough, splatters of blood speckling the bare fur of his chest a light crimson.

“Eight? Mr. Peabody!” Sherman shook the canine as his body slowly went still. “Mr... Mr. Peabody?”

The white paw along the boy's cheek went limp.

“DAD?!”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Now, five years after the death of Mr. Peabody, Sherman Peabody had finally modified the WABAC machine to fulfill this purpose of locating the right people for the job. He'd learned much through history, enough to know that sometimes the best way to fight fire, is with fire. He wouldn't be choosy with whom he could get on his side, so that meant opening up the invitation to those with a less-than-stellar track record with the law, if it came down to it.

Sherman outfitted the WABAC with some essentials: a remodel of the inside, making it capable of housing a total of nine comfortably (the destined “Eight” as it were, plus Sherman himself), not to mention a Mess Hall and a spacious Cargo Hold.

That's right: the WABAC went from being a simple Time Machine to becoming a Time Ship! All of the technology, all of the plans that Mr. Peabody had always wished to implement were finally coming to fruition through the eyes of his son. He would have been proud...

It admittedly took Sherman awhile to recalculate the WABAC to go from a simple Time Machine to a Dimension-Hopping Machine, but all of his hard work paid off. Clearly.

The young man strode through the pristine platinum halls of the ship, running his fingers along the smooth walls.

“WABAC, set coordinates.”

“-Sure thing, Mr. Peabody. When and where would you like to go?-”

Sherman looked at the hundreds of viewing monitors in front of him. Each one showed a unique individual that showed some promise. His fingers swiped through the air, maximizing and minimizing windows as he pondered his decision.

“Let's give the Dimension Drive a whirl, shall we? Take us to the nearest one.”

“Affirmative. Please fasten your seatbelt, Mr. Peabody. We may experience a bit of turbulence.”

And with that, the shimmering vessel vanished into a whirling vortex that opened above it, sending it hurtling through various dimensional rifts to locate the mysterious Eight that Mr. Peabody had suggested.

“We'll avenge you, Dad. I promise.”

Welcome to When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Is it my secret (and not-so-secret) hope that this game takes off and we can create a great story together with the help of fantastic people like yourselves! We want strong, dedicated players who aren't afraid to push the limits of their potential and create GOOD WORK that we can all be proud of.

The premise of the game is very simple: a band of villains from multiple universes have formed an alliance (be it uneasy or otherwise) in order to conquer the multiverse. Players will be playing the roles of fictional characters in order to join together with Sherman and the WABAC to hopefully take them down.

The villains will be revealed in due time... -insert evil laugh here-

And many of you may be asking:

Q: “Shakespur, who can I play?”

A: “Well that's simple: Anyone you want! Amended: Any canon fictional character. No original characters of your own making. (Too much confusion due to this not being clearer on my part.) Just because you're pitting yourselves against villains and who knows what else in your dimension-hopping adventure doesn't mean you have to play someone with the ability to do so! Want to be the Average Joe? Maybe you want to play as Gwen from Total Drama Island or Trent Lane from Daria. Just let your mind roam the expanse of fictional worlds and go nuts!”

Q: “Does that go for bad guys too?”

A: “Yes! You can play bad guys, good guys, and anything else you want! So long as they're fictional, they have earned the right to be a part of this game.”

Q: “But what about super god-like characters like Goku and Superman?”

A: “If you think they'd be too powerful, I'd suggest not playing them. But if you really really REALLY want to play someone like that, I wouldn't mind. After all, I can scale the game to suit you.”

Q: “How many parts are open?”

A: “Aside from Sherman, the bad guys (who will all be one character), I will be reserving one spot for myself, leaving seven more open for the rest of you to fill in. Should the game not draw as many as I hoped, I can open two characters per player.

Q: “What will we be doing exactly?”

A: “With the help of the WABAC, your characters will go to different dimensions, timelines, etc and fight against the forces of evil that have made their influence there. Eradicate, liberate, and do whatever seems best to suit that world. If making sure that the Red Skull kills Captain America seems to be the best course of action, then by all means...

Q: “What if we have more questions?”

A: “Ask away! I'm always willing to field questions and help players initiate themselves into my game!”

And now for the character sheet!

Sherman Peabody, Goodnight Robicheaux

Onboard the WABAC, Roughly Noon, Timeline Unknown

“Woah-oh, we're halfway there...” Sherman sang to himself as he paced the hallways of the WABAC, idly tapping away at his portable digital screen. He'd logged so much in such little time, thinking back on how he'd already gathered four of the Eight he'd been told to find.

“WABAC, power grid update.”

“-Mr. Peabody, currently I am running at 85% peak efficiency and on 50% normal power. Reserves are still at 100%. A quick stop would be ideal to recharge for the time being.-”

“A recharge already? Sounds like you're looking for an excuse to take a break.” Sherman chuckled.

“-Absolutely not, Mr. Peabody. Given that our crew is half of what it should be, we're currently trying to accommodate the needs of the others the best we can. Changes have been made to make things feel more like home. Also, it should probably be noted that the changes to the Medical Bay have been utilizing 70% more energy than originally anticipated...-”

Sherman smirked and adjusted his glasses. “I'll have a word with the Medic about it. Until then, a brief break sounds like it could do everyone some good. Maybe we can find a better form of energy to use in the meantime?”

“-As you wish, Mr. Peabody. Shall I alert the crew?-”

“No, just keep us on course and find the nearest Dimension to pull over in. I'll go speak with the crew.”

A few lights blipped along the silvered hallways of the ship and within moments, the WABAC was already setting a course for a nearby dimension.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Sherman continued through the ship, passing by the Mess Hall on his way towards the dormitories. He took pause in his step when he saw that Goodnight was already enjoying a glass of something by himself.

“Mr. Robicheaux?” Sherman addressed, always trying his best to be polite.

“Mr. Peabody?” He quipped back with a grin, sipping his drink idly. “You know, I can't say I've been fond of the name 'Sherman'. Nothing against you of course, boy.” The sharpshooter smirked.

“If it had anything to do with what happened in 1864, I can assure you that definitely wasn't me.”

“Never said it was, Sherman.” He took another drink, downing the amber liquid before pouring another. “William T. had a lot of stones to do what he did. Just like you've got a lot of stones doing what you're doing now.”

Goody shared a look with the young man, sliding the nearby stool from the bar towards Sherman. “The second time I've been asked to undertake such a venture and this time... this time it seems like the odds are stacked even more heavily against us.”

“They're not good people, Mr. Robicheaux.”

“They never are.”

A long silence was shared between them, the redheaded young man standing awkwardly to the side as he drummed his fingertips along the side of his pants.

“I've got the WABAC setting us down for awhile. We can get out, stretch our legs...”

Goody laughed.

“Well that sounds marvelous! Some fresh air and sunshine could do us all some good. You just let ol' Goodnight know when we arrive so I can prepare myself proper.” He winked at Sherman and raised his glass, taking yet another drink.

“Will do. Thanks, Mr. Robicheaux.” Sherman smiled, feeling genuinely relieved that he'd brought the man along. He'd had some reservations at first, though it was mostly because Goodnight had been riding his horse in the direction opposite that of where he had intended to be... where he was told to be.

“You're mighty welcome, Mr. Peabody.”

Sherman exited the Mess Hall, continuing onward through the ship to do a quick check on his other crewmates: Debra, Seria, and the Medic.

Seria

"How did I get myself in this mess? I already have enough work keeping tabs on that moronic summoner, but now here I am helping some random stranger! How did Karl even convince me to come along...he seemed much more willing to go but instead he sends me instead insisting he can watch over the summoner. I am more worried that he is more likely to screw up! Knowing that stupid summoner he is going to screw up! Those victories of his was always a fluke!" A woman argued with herself in pure irritation.

The woman, Seria a summoner from Grand Gaia was busy lamenting her decision to go with these people. Not only did she looked irritated, but she seemed more angry at her friends who insisted she should go. Although after a few seconds she calmed down a bit, whats done is done. Honestly, it was good to get away from that summoner, less headaches she would have to endure from his always lost in the clouds attitude and overconfident nature.

With the peace and quiet, Seria took the time to fix her appearance. She loosened the band around her black hair keeping it in a ponytail and let it flow freely behind her. She then produced a comb and began to comb her hair. While she did this she looked over her armor and checked on it for damage. She was currently wearing more simple clothing, a white cloth shirt and a pair of black shorts. It was always good to check on your armor to make sure it was in peak condition, if it was fixed then it would not shatter during battle

There were a few cracks in her red plate armor, however nothing that a bit of work wont fix. Or more correctly a bit of magic would easily repair it in a matter of seconds. However she was not that big in a hurry to fix it, she had plenty of free time on her hands and left it as it was and resumed to groom herself for a bit. Who knew how long she had to travel with this bunch, hopefully they were not problematic. However with peace came her wandering mind, and soon she remembered how exactly she was dragged into this mess...

Grand Gaia, Morning, Meeting With Sherman

"Karl! Are you serious right now! We have to head back even though we came out this far! There is a demon up ahead and we can't go back now!" Seria pointed at a young blue haired man who simply smiled while scratching his head. "Sorry Seria, we have been specifically ordered by the Summoners Of Old to head back. A massive energy inflow has been detected, and its too dangerous for us to continue our pursuit." Karl replied as calmly as he could to soothe his hot headed friend.

Of course, Seria was not calmed by her friends calm demeanor. "Well lets deal with the demon first then return! We are nearly there and are completely capable of taking it out, its the final demon on our list! We can't simply abandon---" Her sentence was cut off however as a strange mechanical ship had suddenly appeared from right above them. "I think that's where the energy inflow was coming from, it looks like that massive ship traveled from some sort of gate. This might be troublesome...we don't know if they are hostile or not..." Karl spoke as he gripped his spear as he watched the ship land.

As the two looked at the ship, a figure of a young man walked off the ship seemingly coming in peace. Seria was completely on guard however Karl seemed more relaxed. "Hold on, let me see what he wants. He looks like a friendly person." Karl chuckled a bit while Seria looked at him rather irritated. "Looks friendly...are you kidding me Karl! For all we know he could be a disciple of a God coming to kill us! Or some strange freak looking to kill us!" Seria yelled at karl who just simply shrugged and walked over to the man.

Seria watched from afar, not hearing their conversation. Minutes soon ticked by and eventually Karl walked back to her before speaking. "Well...turns out the man is looking for help to find the people who murdered his dad." Karl spoke a little sad and although Seria looked a little sad at first returned to her usual cold attitude. "Well he has to look elsewhere, Karl you know we have our own mission to fulfill. We can't randomly go out of our way to help him, we have our duty as summoners to destroy the demons, monsters and even the Gods that come threaten our world. Who knows how long we may be gone, once we are done here we have to help your dumb friend find the four fallen Gods! That summoner really annoys me!" Seria argued and Karl began to reason with her. "I know, we have our mission however its also our mission to help those that need it. Besides we are already halfway done with our goal right? My friend already killed two of the Gods, I am sure I can keep him company until you returns, besides...It took us a very long time to find the two fallen Gods...I am sure by the time you return we might have not found our target." Karl laughed a bit and Seria raised an eye. "You are talking like you chose me to go along...Sure its our job to help people like him however I don't trust you or that summoner! You know his wins were flukes! We were there to support him! Its not like he did it himself!"

"But he did deliver the finishing blow, and faced them alone each of those times..."

"Yeah! Thanks to our efforts to support him to get him to that point! And why me exactly!? You are more suited for this!

"Well...You are pretty powerful and strong, you are also caring when the going gets tough."

"C-Caring! You idiot I am not that c-caring! W-Whatever! Fine I will go with that guy to avenge his father! That way I don't have to listen to you or that summoner or that green haired baboon!" Seria crossed her arms and with that she accepted the offer to join up to avenge a fallen father.

Yeah, seriously! We've already started and I have yet to really hear from anyone else as far as their first posts.

I'm really hoping this hasn't died :(

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Woah, what happened to the posing? Who is still left here?

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

I have no problems with swearing, especially if it's part of how the character is played.

If you feel like it might get to the point of being extremely excessive, then maybe tone it back just a tad. Otherwise, I've got no issues with F-Bombs and the like.

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Huh....I have no qualms with a F-bomb now and then. I guess keep it on the down low. Depends on what our dear host says.

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Loving the story so far, but just a quick question before I start with mine... How does everyone feel about swearing? I think I'm going to use words like "flipping hell" instead, and you could pretend it's more harsh language?

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Woot! The posting has begun! I hope my post was good...Was not sure how the past meeting would have been. Honestly thought you would be picking us all one at a time XD

So I did the next best thing, have my pal do the talking! Hope that works...

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Apologies for a double post, but I just wanted to let everyone know the first post is up!

If you'd like, I'd love to see a little background on how Sherman may have encountered you guys and managed to convince you to come along. A little past exposition, if you will.

The starter of course assumes that the four of you have already been gathered by Sherman to undertake this quest. Once we get a good intro from everyone I'll progress the story along.

Thanks again to everyone who has joined so far! I look forward to telling a great story to all of you!

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

You needn't change at all. The point of it is to play your favorite canon character in this sort of setting. I think Debra is going to be surprised at what she sees as the game goes on.

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Thanks, Shakespur!

I've added a wee bit more, and will continue to update it when something springs to mind :) I just wasn't sure about putting spoilers about the show in case anyone hasn't seen but wants to :P If we get more people joining who don't know who she is, I don't mind switching to someone else like Willow from Buffy, or a Star trek character like Spock xD

Looking forward to it :D

I appreciate your interest here, Petra!

It looks like Debra could use with just a little more in her background to help enlighten those not familiar with Dexter but of course we could always just use Google to find out, right? ;)

Other than that, I would very much like to welcome you aboard! I'm currently working on a few edits to a couple things and also trying to get a starter post for all of us.

Bear with me folks!

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Well cheers then, I will try and continue to recruit people. Although I really look forward to this! All the battles! The comedy maybe! And most of all adventure awaits us all!

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

No worries! I have hope that even if we start with just ourselves, the game isn't centered around having all Eight to start off with. If by the end of the weekend we don't have a few more people, I'll get us started and we can go from there.

And if worst comes to worst, I'll open up secondary character spots for us if need be.

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

So far efforts to recruit on my end has not fished up anyone, gonna try again tomorrow...Hope this gains interest...I really don't wanna begin with a skeleton crew, but some say less people the better.

I do like less people since less risk of leavers ruining the story. Regardless gonna see if I can round up at least one more person.

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Okay, I opened up a Discord account and I got a few things set up there (just kind of testing it out at the moment.)

It's asking me to add a few friends, so if you want to add me on there, PM me and I'll send you my 4 digit code. My name on there is also Shakespur.

Edit: Also, do pass the word around if you think there would be anyone interested in participating as well. I made a thread in the Roleplayers Wanted forum, just to help spark some interest.

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Discord is relatively simple to start up, you usually create an account and you make your personal channel which only people who you invite can join

You can then create different rooms in the channel for different thing like say...one room is for talking about ideas, another is for gaming and anotehr is for music. That sort of thing. But we just need to make a server, you dont have to set up the server but creating an account would be good. That or we could just skype....like plenty of others...

Skype name is BruvahMarine
Discord is the same BruvahMarine

I can help with the discord, not much experience with setting up rooms but I can assist.

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

Zalgo wrote:Well, my issue is that on top of having to redo an entire character sheet to write up another character to play I'd also have to play another person's work. I'm generally never too keen to use other people's characters and while working within an established universe can offer interesting potential I find it better personally to issue my own stories within the setting rather than do the author's characters a disservice by portraying them in what would inevitably be different from how they were envisioned to be. Also, to be quite frank, there are few characters in existing fiction I'd be happy with writing for and close to all of the ones I am more comfortable with would have little to no reason to assist in this adventure.

I could be convinced to stay but ultimately I'm looking to use Joe & Frank. I could change it up by saying they're in something like Monster Hunter or some matter of work as those include characters generated by people that operate and exist in the cannon universe. If that cannot abide however I sadly must give this rp a pass.

Then I regret to see you go, my friend. I do hope that you get to utilize Joe & Frank in another game and hope to have the opportunity to play with you in the future. Excelsior.

I'm thinking of maybe pulling the Medic from Team Fortress 2, because I'm sure he'll be real fun and wacky. Who's the Medic, you ask? Meet the Medic

I was wondering if it would be possible if the GM could organize a Discord or Skype group, just so those of us who are involved in the roleplay can keep closer contact. In the past, I've found this to be hugely successful.

I've never heard if Discord, but if someone wouldn't mind helping me set one up, then I certainly wouldn't mind getting behind it to help collaborate with all of you!

And the Medic is brilliant. A most interesting addition!

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

"Having a medic is always good! Its never bad!" Mhm. Yeah. Totally nothing wrong with this medic at all. Totally in it to keep the team alive and not just to try out his latest experiments or something.

Re: When & Where: Tales Across the Multiverse

I saw you before Lloyd999, Yeah having some sort of Discord/Skype group would help. Also everyone knows having a medic is always good! Its never bad!
