Due to her gender ambiguous nickname, many who hear her name assume the current avatar to be male. Most who still believe in the avatar also mistakenly believe the avatar to be of the water tribe. The mystery and misinformation surrounding the nature of her identity becomes an asset to Hyo.
Hyo's appearance in itself is as androgynous as her name. With strong eyes, muscle tone, and a rough-and-tumble demeanor, she could pass for a pretty guy with the right attire. Her build is low in fat and dense in bone, so the baggy attire she favors could easily obscure her figure should she wish it. However, for now, gender neutrality isn't quite what she needs.
Before she left the air temple, her home for sixteen years, Hyo made a request to the refugees that raised her: give her the most stereotypically pampered, lady-like outfit they had on hand. Although confused and more than a little concerned, they complied. Of course, considering her size and the fact that most of the refugees in her temple were martial artists, the best they could do was a simple dress and hair accessory. It was enough. Since Hyo had been growing her hair out for the day she eventually leaves the air temple, the outfit was enough to make her look undeniably girlish, as well as distinctly non-bender.
Unfortunately, the young avatar is not very good with change. Dressing like a well-off young woman doesn't mean Hyo can necessarily act like one, especially when she grew up raised by all kinds of people from all different classes, united only by their earthbending. Her movements lack the grace of a lady, instead retaining the dynamic movements of a fighter. She's clearly not used to wearing a skirt and is bad about sitting properly. Hyo has no qualms about walking around a little beaten up and wears bruises with dismissive pride.

Avatar Hyo is well aware of the hopes people place in her. It’s even in her name. As darkness falls over the world, she is the one who needs to bring balance to the world, the dawn of a new era, bearer of light. She was born with this burden and she feels that she must grow sturdy enough to shoulder it.
However, how does one protect something they have never known? How does one grow strong with no experience? Hyo was sheltered away from the rest of the world for all her life, and so she is naïve and peculiar and strange. She is fascinated by everything in the outside world, be it flora and fauna or cultural artifacts. She is easily excited by relics of the peaceful past she never knew. There is something childlike in her wonder and enthusiasm. She laughs freely without restraint for circumstances. She knows little of loss and nothing of grief – only in passing from the stories of others. The loss of her air temple is her first real experience with tragedy, and even then it has yet to feel quite real to her. Thus, she is like a child that only knows of death from fairytales in books. That special brand of naivety also spills over into other aspects of her personality as well.
She has had limited interactions with people. In fact, she has had no real interactions with strangers whatsoever, only people who raised her or grew up with her. Thus, she can come off as somewhat bold or ignorant when it comes to social niceties, or just plain immature. Because she lived with no one who wished ill of her, she can be poor with judging people’s character. She isn’t used to being deceived. She isn’t used to being betrayed. And let it be known that she doesn’t like it at all.
Having grown up with Seok Quan as a close friend, he’s had quite an influence on her. Although she retains her serious and steadfast nature, his (horrible) sense of humor has rubbed off on her, along with a smidge of his sarcasm. Her straightforward delivery might leave some people scratching heads, but she’s the kind of person that appreciates a good joke. That is, in casual situations. When it comes to matters of the Avatar and the state of the world, Hyo is dearly and deadly serious. She’s been told since birth that she is the world’s only hope, and she would do anything to live up to it. Although she might seem in a good place and secure, how the cracks begin to show when she’s put under pressure. She is the Avatar. She is hope. She needs to be strong enough to do it on her own.

Food – she’s not fond of sweets, which dissolve on the tongue and never even reach the stomach. She likes dense dishes that are filling and leave you full.
Cold Treats - however, cold treats are a different story. She's found them to be delightful after a heated training session.
History – she loves to hear about the glories of the nations in the past, what they were like before the Faceless Ones attacked. Unfortunately, those who remember the past are beginning to number few.
D I S L I K E S
Swimming – she lived in a temple in the sky, when could she possibly have learned to swim?
Children – they’re so small and so delicate! How should she treat them? Oh, and they cry, she never did at their age! Rather than outright dislike them, she is baffled and confused as to how to treat them.
The Faceless Ones – they were the first to show them all that’s wrong with the world. They destroyed the only home she knew, hurt the ones who raised her. She’s going to make them pay.
Change – she can trust in what she knows, but when all is uprooted, she’s left with nothing but uncertainty.
Q U I R K S
Thumbs – she can dislocate them with relative ease and little pain. Very convenient to escape wrist ties.
Blushing – her ears color red when she’s flustered or angry. Flushing in the face out of embarrassment is rare, but her ears are always her tell.
S K I L L S
Fighting – bending aside, Hyo is very good at fighting in general. However, as she studied a mixture of martial arts and the anything-goes style of the streets, she is definitely not the most honorable of opponents. She would have to study a proper form to go into formal sports.
Resourceful – in the mental and physical sense, Hyo can come up with a plan from scraps. Perhaps in part due to her isolation, her mind is far-reaching and she is uninhibited by ideas of what’s ‘appropriate’ or ‘socially acceptable’ to do. Goal oriented, give her an inch and she will reach for the next mile.
Omashu of the Earth Kingdom; unknown to her
The current avatar, Hyobin Lei was born in the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu. She was taken from her parents at birth, located swiftly due to a prophecy from the previous, forgotten avatar. From there, she was whisked away to the air temples to be protected, taught, and trained. She wasn’t told anything of her family in fear that she would seek them out. Her childhood was a limited one, turned serious too quickly by earthbenders eager to train their savior. Since she could walk, Hyo knew she was expected to master forms and become strong, although she wasn’t quite sure why. There were people from all walks of life, and so rather than any proper fighting style of tradition, what Hyo learned was the confused hodgepodge of a child with too many teachers. Struggling and inefficient. Martial arts and street smarts could only blend so far.
All this time, Hyo had no friends her age. They numbered few, and what children did live at the air temples were kept away from her by frightened parents, fearful that their children would be exposed to danger if they associated with the Avatar in these dark times. In this sense, although Hyo did have people who cared for her, she did not quite have a normal childhood.
Eventually more refugees filtered in, more earthbenders, and amongst them was a boy a little older than her. Fascinated by someone so close to her age, Hyo set out to befriend this boy. She sought to sate all her curiosity about the outside world through him, asking questions, seeking answers. They became good friends, and Seok's (bad) sense of humor rubbed off on her. Above all else, they studied earthbending together, and to Hyo's great surprise, found that she learns best from him.
It all made sense when one day, upon meditating, she spoke with the spirits and discovered that she must seek out the blessed benders. Knowing of the mark on her friend's arm, Hyo had been thrilled - one down, and her friend to boot! Perhaps that meant she had three more friends waiting for her out there. Of course, she is not one to forget her duty. Hyo came up with a plan and a ruse and took her time to prepare, and now that she is ready, she is heading out into the great wide world for the first time.
But then the Faceless Ones attacked. The invasion was harsh and unexpected. No one was prepared. Fortunately, in her self-selected disguise, no one suspected her to be the avatar for even a moment. The earthbenders she’d grown up around all rallied to keep the Faceless Ones at bay, but they could only do so much. Hyo wanted to jump in, to help them – she was the Avatar, it was her duty…!
No. It was her duty to survive and save the world, not be caught out and perish here. She was useless with only earthbending. She needed her other teachers. She needed to master all the elements. And so while her caretakers and mentors distracted them, Hyo turned her back on the Faceless, took Seok, and ran.
It was Hyo’s first glimpse of true injustice and first taste of bitter anger. It was her wakeup call.
